Our Goal

Enhance data science research proficiency

The goal of this course is to increase scholars’ scientific knowledge, professional skills, motivation, & credentials in the field of data science research. Core competencies to be covered will include Brain health with emphasis on sociodemographic determinants, genomics, brain imaging, Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping & public health, Spatial Epidemiology, Law and Ethics, Stakeholder Engagement, Research Funding/Grantsmanship, Research methods & Management, Responsible Conduct of Research, Collaborative & Networking Skills, Research Communication & Impact. This course will bring together experts, mentors in the field of data science in engaging sessions and professional development activities with selected Scholars/Mentees.

Program Content

Intensive training

The training comprises a 9-month Postgraduate Certificate program that will include six (6) months of online training activities & a compulsory six (6) weeks intensive residency at the University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria, and a brief research project.

Who can apply?

African scholars from various disciplines

African scholars from a variety of disciplines & professions in Africa, with a minimum admission requirement of a Master’s degree in (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, speech therapy, nutritionists, biostatisticians, biomathematicians, bioinformaticists, epidemiologists, health services researchers, health informaticists etc) are welcome to apply.

Application Requirements

Comprehensive application package

Detailed CV highlighting research interests, one-page research proposal of interest, two letters of recommendation from faculty/employer; personal statements indicating interest and suitability for the program, personal statements indicating research interest areas, suitability for and commitment to participate fully in the program, institutional support letter from the department chair (or equivalent) and a signed statement indicating willingness to participate in the mentorship program evaluation activities and commitment to the time needed for the program

Participation format

Both digital and in-person options are available (depending on stage of the program)

Funding support

Selected candidates for the six-week residency in Ibadan, Nigeria will receive some funding support for travel & accommodation.

Start date

The course is expected to commence from February 2024.
